The New Testament is relatively silent on the role of deacons. There are only two New Testament passages that unambiguously deal with the topic of deacons (1 Timothy 3:8-13; Philippians 1:1), and there are two others that likely deal with the topic of deacons (Acts 6:1-7; Romans 16:1). With that said, it is understandable why different churches have different practices by which their deacons operate.
We believe that deacons are God's gifts to the church, and they are designed to work in ways that meet the practical needs of the church, and they work to help promote the unity of the church. The deacons of PHBC work in "task-specific" ways. This means that each deacon typically has one major area over which that deacon provides support. For example, we have a "deacon of building and grounds" who oversees our facilities, and we also have a deacon of ordinances who makes sure that whenever we serve the Lord's Supper or have a baptism, everything is prepared on those Sundays.
You will find below a list of our current task-specific deacons and a brief description of what those roles encompass.
Our deacon of finance works to make sure that we have appropriate financial safeguards in place and that the church-approved budget is followed.
Our deacon of ordinances works to make sure that we are always prepared to administer the ordinances (i.e., the Lord's Supper and baptism).
Our deacon of member care works to make sure that our church members are properly cared for. Because this is a large task, there may from time to time be more than one deacon of member care.
Our deacon of first impressions works to make sure that our greeter ministry is operational so that members and guests alike receive a warm greeting upon arrival.
Our deacon of building and grounds works to make sure that our building and grounds are in a state of good repair.
